BASC Alumni Interviewing

VOLUNTEER FOR BROWN! Stay connected to Brown and meet the University's future by participating in the alumni interviewing program, the New York City Brown Alumni Schools Committee (BASC). We expect over 700 applications to Brown from NYC high school students this year! Early Decision interviews take place from November 1 to Thanksgiving, and Regular Decision interviews take place in January and February. Volunteers can do one or more interviews, as your schedule permits--most people do two or three. If you attended high school in New York City, you can do double alma mater duty by interviewing students from your school, if you choose.

TO SIGN UP: (1) UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION in the Brown Alumni Directory at alumni.brown.edu (no www). All BASC assignments are handled electronically through the alumni website, so it is essential that your information be up-to-date. (2) send an e-mail to BASC Coordinator Valerie Phillips '98 at basc@brownnyc.org. In the e-mail text, include the following information: (a) Your full name and class year; (b) your preferred e-mail address; (c) your preferred phone number and home address; (d) if you went to high school in NYC and wish to interview students from that school, include that information; and (e) indicate your availability for Early Decision, Regular Decision, or both. Once she receives your e-mail, Valerie will assign you to a borough chairperson, who will handle your actual interview assignments. NOTE: some residents of Manhattan will be assigned to interview students who attend high school in outer boroughs. However, interviews can be scheduled at any location that is convenient to the interviewer--your home, your office, a neighborhood Starbucks, etc. Students from the outer boroughs should be expected to travel to Manhattan for the interview if necessary. Further information about BASC can be found online.

PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR BASC ON THE WEBSITE! THE ONLY WAY TO ENSURE THAT YOU WILL BE CONTACTED FOR INTERVIEWS IS TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS HERE.

Inman Page Black Alumni Council

Our mission is to strengthen Brown University by establishing a productive interaction between current black Brown students, faculty, and staff in the New York City metro area. As members of IPC-NY we're channeling our energies toward not only broadening opportunities for the Black community of Brown University in the New York City Metro area but to maximizing NYC alumni participation in the life of the University as well. In addition, we're working with organizations that further the interest of Brown University, including but not limited to The Brown Club of New York.

Our strategy is to energize Metropolitan area alums through various activities and events. However we don't want to have events for events sake. Nor do we want our members to be involved merely for the purpose of attending events. It is our hope that after attending an event people will be mobilized towards action--be it by donating any or all of the following: expertise, brainpower, creativity, time or money.

We want IPC-NY to be a network where we can mentor and counsel one another and additionally, we believe that through The Ethel Tremaine Robinson Foundation, Inc., a fully tax-exempt 501(c) (3) not-for profit founded by some IPC-NY members, we have created innovative projects to stimulate and channel strategic Black philanthropic actions for the benefit of both our beloved University and the Black community at large.

Non-Profit: Street Project

This New York City non-profit organization is currently searching for motivated individuals interested in volunteering in community projects in the local New York City area. Founded in New York City in 1987 by young professionals as a non-partisan organization, Street Project draws upon individuals in private equity, management consulting, publishing, law, advertising, commercial and investment banking, and a variety of other professions to develop its volunteer base. This non-profit community service organization works with service groups around New York City to provide them with enthusiastic volunteers. Street Project offers a diverse set of activities to its volunteers that meet community needs, including inner-city children's programs, environmental and urban restoration projects, homeless and low-income shelters, elderly households, animal shelters and immigrant centers, among others.

Street Project develops and schedules projects that require limited time commitments to meet the needs of its volunteers' demanding schedules. Projects typically take place during weekends or evening hours each month. In addition, there are networking benefits to volunteering, as a large portion of the volunteer base is from the young professional ranks from a variety of industries and professions. Street Project also creates a social atmosphere through several recruiting/fundraising events held throughout the year.

The organization is continually making new projects available to its members and is always looking for energetic people to become project leaders of new activities. Young motivated professionals looking for community service and leadership roles can look to Street Project as an opportunity.
