Brown Club in New York Theater Event: "Telethon" Play and Reception
The Ohio Theatre
Thursday June 25, 2009
7 PM
66 Wooster Street (between Spring & Broome), Soho, New York

Join us for a performance of Telethon, a new play written by Kristin Newbom and directed by Ken Rus Schmoll. The play is produced by ClubbedThumb, an Obie-Award winning theater company founded by two Brown alums, Maria Striar and Meg MacCary. Telethon is a part of Clubbed Thumb’s Summerworks 2009, their 14th annual festival of new plays. There will be a reception for the Brown Club members at 7 PM at the Ohio Theatre before the performance.

Synopsis:

After each of their seasonal ad-hoc fundraising drives, the staff and patients of a group home for the disabled meet at Dunkin’ Donuts to celebrate, detox, squabble and flirt. Out of their savage camaraderie, something like a family begins to emerge…or not.

Critical Acclaim for Clubbed Thumb:

“[One] of the most inventive - and inventively named - downtown troupes.”

~ The New York Times, Jesse McKinley

“Clubbed Thumb has more nerve, more guts, more class per square inch than any not-for-profit small theatre in New York.” ~ Paula Vogel

“Clubbed Thumb invariably matches provocative scripts with smart directors and savvy actors, and the results are rewarding for all.” ~ Paper Magazine, Tom Murrin and Ricky Spears

“If New York has been a fruitful and exciting place to be a playwright in the last decade, Clubbed Thumb can claim a real share of the credit.” ~ Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director, The Public Theater

About Clubbed Thumb:

Clubbed Thumb commissions, develops and produces funny, strange, and provocative new plays by living American writers. Since its founding in 1996, the company has earned 4 OBIES and presented plays in every form of development, including over 70 full productions. Clubbed Thumb is an incubator for artists and their work, staging plays to critical acclaim while supporting an ever-growing creative community.

Clubbed Thumb is dedicated to supporting the work of emerging writers and does so by commissioning new work, offering a range of development programs and mounting full productions. Their plays vary in style and content, but are always intermissionless, 90 minutes or under, and previously unproduced in New York City. They feature substantial and challenging roles for both men and women, are questioning, formally inventive, decidedly theatrical and somewhere in the text they contain a sense of humor.

In 2005, they initiated The Clubbed Thumb Biennial Commission, which awards a playwright $15,000 to write a play for Clubbed Thumb. In May 2001, Clubbed Thumb was awarded an OBIE grant, Off-Broadway’s highest honor, in recognition of their body of work. At the 2006 OBIES, Clubbed Thumb’s production of What Then was honored twice: Meg MacCary received an OBIE for her performance and Rinne Groff received an OBIE grant as an emerging playwright. In 2007, Playscripts published Funny, Strange, Provocative, an anthology of plays produced by Clubbed Thumb. In 2008, Rebecca Wisocky won an OBIE for her performance in their production of Amazons and their Men by Jordan Harrison.

Professor Ken Miller: Thoughts on America’s Continuing Problem with Evolution
Professor Ken Miller '70: Thoughts on America’s Continuing Problem with Evolution
Tuesday May 19, 2009
6:30 - 8:30 pm
2 West 64th Street

Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection underlies all modern biology. It enables us to decipher our genes, fight viruses and to understand Earth’s fossil record and rich biodiversity. Simple yet at times controversial, misunderstood and misused for social goals, the theory remains unchallenged as the central concept of biology.

Charles Darwin, reluctant revolutionary, profoundly altered our view of the natural world and our place in it. This special Brown club program featuring Kenneth R. Miller will enhance our understanding of Darwin and the significance of his effect on modern science.

Kenneth R. Miller, Ph.D is a cell biologist and the author of the most widely used high school biology textbooks in America. He is the author of the acclaimed book; Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution, a lively and cutting-edge analysis of the key issues that seem to divide science and religion. Professor Miller is also the author of Only A Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America’s Soul. Dr. Miller did his undergraduate work at Brown, and earned a Ph.D in 1974 at the University of Colorado. He spent six years as Assistant Professor at Harvard University before returning to Brown University in 1980. His research work on cell membrane structure and function has produced more than 50 scientific papers and reviews in leading journals, including CELL, Nature, and Scientific American. Miller is coauthor, with Joseph S. Levine, of three different high school and college biology textbooks which are used by millions of students nationwide. He has received 5 major teaching awards. In 2005, he received the Presidential Citation of the American Institute for Biological Sciences for Distinguished service to the field of Biology and in 2006 he received the Public Service Award from the American Society for Cell Biology based on his work defending the integrity of science and science education. Recently, the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) voted to give Professor Miller their 2008 award for Advancing the Public Understanding of Science.

AFFILIATE EVENT: BULAC Wine Tasting
Community Resource Exchange
Thursday March 26, 2009
6:30 - 8:30 pm
42 Broadway 20th Floor New York, NY 10004

Spain and South America play an incredibly significant role in the global wine scene. Yet as intertwined as their histories are, their wines are considerably different – just like their futbol teams! Discover for yourself the similarities and differences as Brian leads you through a blind tasting of six pairs, each including a Spanish wine versus a South American Wine.

The pairings will square off wines from Rias Baixas, Rioja/Ribera del Duero, Navarra, Catalonia, and Priorat against those of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.

At the end of the tasting, we’ll tally the votes and see who wins – New World or Old?

About Brian:

Gnarly Vines Wine & Spirits, an exciting and eclectic wine shop in Fort Greene, Brooklyn is the culmination of Brian’s life-long passion for wine that began when he was a fifteen year old exchange student in a suburb of Paris. After many years of studying, collecting and most importantly drinking wine, he turned his passion into his profession on Bastille Day 1997
when he became the Director of the Wine Auction Department at Phillips Auctioneers.
He has also served as the lead wine specialist for Christies and as the East Coast Director for Winebid.com.

BROWN CLUB EXCLUSIVE:  See the show and stay for a special talk-back with playwright Gina Gionfriddo MFA'97

$42 Ticket Special – USE CODE ‘BRWN’

“This may be the funniest show of the season!” – Adam Feldman, Time Out New York

“Gina Gionfriddo’s comedy of bad manners, a tangled tale of love, sex and ethics among a quartet of men and women in their 30’s, is as engrossing as it is ferociously funny, like a big box of fireworks fizzing and crackling across the stage from its first moments to its last. The plot turns on the ghastly ramifications of one colossally bad setup. How bad? Well, the first date involves a visit to a police station. For lovers of theater this deftly plotted, scabrous and sharp-witted new play proves a bracing antidote to dispiriting news.” – Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

"GINA GIONFRIDDO IS SOME KIND OF GENIUS! Sends little shockwaves of delight through the house."
- Marilyn Stasio, Variety

"'BECKY SHAW' HAS A LASCERATING SENSE OF HUMOR AND RAZOR-SHARP PERFORMANCES."
- Roma Torre, NY1

Guided Tour of MOMA Highlights
Museum of Modern Art
Sunday March 8, 2009
Tour begins at 3:20 PM. Meeting time - 3PM in the main lobby.
11 West 53rd Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues)

Always wanted to learn about Modern Art? Sunday football games and knitting circles, not your thing?

Looking for a great outing on a Sunday afternoon?  Inspired by dada and action painting?  What was the larger-than-life transvestite Leigh Bowery doing in the art world with Sigmund Freud's grandson?

Have a question about your favorite modern art piece, or want to know how to make out that soccer player in Boccioni's famous Dynamism of a Soccer Player?  How did MOMA's Rodin sculpture of Balzac inspire his mistress Camille Claudel?  How many times a day did colorist/impressionist Bonnard's wife bathe?  (How did Edvard Munch, the screamer that he is, influence one of Jasper Johns's most famous motifs?)  Join your fellow Brown alums and a well-versed museum docent for a guided tour of the world's most complete and wide-ranging modern art collection, organized exclusively for The Brown University Club in New York.

We will tour the most significant artworks in the MoMA collection with the focus on the 4th and 5th floor Painting and Sculpture galleries - from Cezanne to Picasso to Pollock to Warhol (just to name a few).  This tour is geared towards beginners who like to finger-paint, (soon-to-be-famous) art historians, art world critics and gallerists, and everyone else in-between.

Think your dog looks like a Brancusi, or simply want to know what's the difference between an Impressionist and a Fauvist (without making any lightbulb jokes)?  There will be an opportunity for Q&A with the guide during the tour. Bring your questions and join us for a fun, playful "boogie-woogie" Sunday afternoon in one of the world's most beloved museums!

Ticket Price: $30 per person.  Limited availability so please register soon.

Meeting place: MoMA's main lobby, near Information Desk.

Brown, Harvard & Yale debate event
Masters School
Friday December 5, 2008
7:30pm
49 Clinton Ave Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522 (914) 479-6460

This year students from the Brown, Harvard and Yale debate teams will meet for an exhibition tournament on Friday evening, December 5, 2008 – details below. We appreciate the enthusiasm alumni and their families have expressed for this event and hope that you will join us for what promises to be a stimulating evening of debate addressing current events and important social issues. It will be an exciting and worthwhile evening for all who attend.

The event begins with student debaters from Harvard, Yale and Brown squaring off in a traditional college debate format. A few Westchester high school students in the audience will then be selected to participate in the second debate, with each high school student teamed with a partner from Brown, Harvard or Yale. After a brief intermission for refreshments and preparation, the college-high school debates will occur.   This will be the first time Brown participates in this type of event in Westchester with Harvard and Yale. Last year, more than 325 people attended a similar exhibition match. Both alums and students are welcome and – thanks to our three sponsors -- there is no admission charge.

Cocktails & Appetizers after the Homecoming Football Game (cash bar)
Brown Classes of the '80s Get Together at Viva after the Homecoming Game!

Saturday, September 27th, 2008
3:30-5:30 p.m.
Viva
234 Thayer Street at Angell Street
Providence, RI 02906

Come reminisce with your fellow Brown '80s classmates about
the days when

"The Boss" was Bruce Springsteen, not the guy you work for
Space Invaders was the pinnacle of video games
The Celtics ruled the Old Garden
And collectively, we all traveled "Back to the Future."

Come hoist a glass to the days when
Keeney Quad was still West Quad
Pluto was still a planet
"Planet Claire" was a hit single
And "single" referred to a malt scotch, not a relationship status.

Come remember when a bar called "Viva" was still SPATS
The Rocky Horror Picture show starred Tim Curry not John
Travolta
Google was a large number, not the ruler of the planet
And Prince was still "Prince," not the
artist-formerly-known-as-Prince-who-is-now-Prince-again.

Come recall the halcyon days before email, cell phones, iPods,
Blackberries.
The days when, if we were outside throwing a football or a
frisbee,
Answering machines didn't answer for us
We answered for ourselves.

On the Inside Track: Navigating the Ever-Changing Landscape of College Admissions
Helen Mills Theatre
Saturday September 20, 2008
11AM - 1PM
135 West 26th St. (Btw 6th and 7th Avenues)

As the number of applications to selective colleges continues to reach new heights, so does the level of panic and frenzy surrounding the college admissions process. The Brown Club in New York is proud to host an illuminating seminar with Dean James Miller, Director of Admissions at Brown.

Please note that this is not a college information session but rather an interactive seminar designed specifically to address many of the recent changes in the college admissions process.

During the seminar, Dean Miller will address gender balance, recent shifts in geographic representation, the elimination of early admissions at select institutions, the role of alumni volunteers, radical changes in the financial aid policy (affecting both recipients and non-recipients) and a range of other topics.

Keep in mind that Dean Miller brings with him more than 20 years of experience in the areas of colleges admissions and financial aid at distinguished academic institutions such as Bowdoin and Harvard.  This a unique opportunity to get real answers to your questions from someone on the inside track of college admissions.

This event is open to alumni, family, and friends.  Parents are encouraged to bring their children and attend as a family.

Cost: $60 per family.

Space limited!!!

Wednesday May 7, 2008
7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
228 West Broadway (@ N. Moore in Tribeca)

Join us for drinks and artisanal cheeses with a professional wine connoisseur. Learn about wine-and-cheese pairings! Meet fellow Brown foodies...

In celebration of the arrival of spring, it's time to dust off the picnic basket and pack it with some great wine and cheese.

This event will introduce you to some of Spain’s great red wines and artisanal cheeses. You’ll savor 4 different cheeses paired nicely with 4 Spanish wines while having fun learning about the variety of grapes, aging methods and even decipher the label. At the end of the tasting, you’ll know what to pick up for your next outdoor gathering.

We will have exclusive use of the Bubble Lounge's downstairs "wine cellar" for this special tasting!

Whether you are an oenophile, interested in affinage or fromage, or simply a lover of all things Miro and membrillo-like, this should be a great occassion to sip, savor, take a break, and relax with your fellow alums! Conjure a sultry evening with Picasso and Almodovar, practice your Spanish, debate Cervantes, talk about bullfighting. Sip a glass, and dream of flamenco and wafting Seville oranges.

April Cullom of Casa Abril, Tastings and Tours Through Spain, will be hosting us for a gracious, palate-stimulating and fun evening!

807 Ninth Avenue (b/w 53rd and 54th Streets)

Just when you thought...

That the days of the Teflon President were over
That power lunches had given way to purna yoga
That Cher would age gracefully
And trickle-down economics had really trickled...

The Brown Club invites you to an 80s night
We're talking Big Stuff, including Big Hair and humongous shoulder pads

Resuscitate those baggy pant suits and join us
for an evening where electric blue knitwear rules,
Leveraged buyouts still raise eyebrows,
And absolutely no foam padding is left behind.

Meet fellow 1980s classmates
(as well as those who just can't get enough of your old Armani look).

Be sure to wear your power suit, cause we'll buy free drinks for whoever scores the biggest, boxiest, most artificially induced shoulder span.

Plus, you may win one of our fabulous prizes including two tickets to the Wine Enthusiast Talk of the Town wine tasting on May 19, tickets to a performance by Pascal Rioult Dance, a bottle of everyone's favorite liqueur, B&B, and lots of cute Brown stuff.

We've got some great drink specials, at almost-1980s prices.

Legendary Pianist Martha Argerich Plays Beethoven with the NY Phil
Lincoln Center (Avery Fisher Hall)
Friday April 25, 2008
8pm to 10:30 pm
65th and Columbus

Join us for an evening with the NY Philharmonic and one of the greatest living pianists of our time.

SOLD-OUT!

Please join us for a rare appearance of the fiery Martha Argerich for an evening live at Lincoln Center with Charles Dutoit conducting the New York Philharmonic. This is a concert that you are unlikely to forget.

(A) Critical Acclaim:

"The way the piano suddenly thunders under the pressure of Argerich's small frame is a physical fact that resists explanation. It can only be described as a possession, a visitation, such as seems to happen when great singers take the stage." --- Alex Ross, The New Yorker

"Argerich never fails to surprise." --- Town & Country

"Going into this performance I would have said that it was easier for a pianist to make an impression in the Chopin, which invites rhapsodic freedom, than in the Schumann, which needs some degree of classical rigor and restraint. Ms. Argerich's account changed that assumption." --- Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times (on reviewing a Schumann performance)

(B) Program includes:

Mozart: Overture to The Marriage of Figaro

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances

Ravel: La Valse

(C) 20% Discount (and avoid handling fees!) and Excellent Seats.

$55 (Members) , $65 (Guests and Non-Members)

Women in Politics: Why They Don't Run for Office and What Happens When They Do
Pembroke Women Politics 2008
Thursday April 24, 2008
6:30 p.m. reception; 7:00 p.m. program
229 West 97th Street, New York, NY

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Please contact the Pembroke Center Associates of Brown University to register. Kindly provide your name, address, phone number, class year and names of any guests you plan to bring. Phone: (401) 863-3433 E-mail: Pembroke_Associates@brown.edu

Please join the Pembroke Center Associates in three cities for this exciting program exploring the role of women in the political process! Professor Lawless will talk about her research into political ambition and the manner in which gender affects the decision to run for office. She is co-author (with Richard Fox) of the recent book, It Takes A Candidate: Why Women Don't Run for Office (Cambridge University Press, 2005), based on the data from the Citizen Political Ambition Survey, a national survey she conducted of almost 3,800 potential candidates. Her research found that women, even in the highest tiers of professional accomplishment, are substantially less likely than men to seek elected office, be recruited to run for office, or express a willingness to run for office in the future. Lawless also will speak from her own experience as a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Rhode Island's second congressional district in 2006.

Food including kosher food will be available for those feeling peckish.

About Jennifer Lawless

Jennifer L. Lawless received her Ph.D. from Stanford University. She is an assistant professor of political science at Brown University, with a courtesy appointment at the Taubman Center for Public Policy. Her teaching and research focus on gender politics, electoral politics, and public opinion. She is the co-author of It Takes A Candidate: Why Women Don't Run for Office (Cambridge University Press, 2005); and has also published numerous articles in academic journals, such as The American Journal of Political Science, The Journal of Politics, Political Research Quarterly, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and Women and Politics. Dr. Lawless has become a nationally recognized expert and speaker on the subject of women candidates. In 2006, she ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in Rhode Island's second congressional district.

Clash of the Trivia Titans: Brown v. U Chicago
TBA
Sunday April 13, 2008
3:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Sunday afternoon, Midtown south of Grand Central.

Play a game like charades and beat the pants off another school's alumni!

Are you good with names? Horrible with names? Like games? Like trivia? Want to show-off your smarty-pants with the new spring season? Are you married to a UChicago alum? It's time to take off the gloves!!

We are looking to put together a team to face up to the challenge by the University of Chicago to play them in a game of "Mies van der Rohe" (otherwise known as "Celebrity"), a game involving wits, a knowledge of trivia, and guessing which celebrity or famous person that someone on your team is describing. The match is set for Sunday, April 13, 2008.

Wide knowledge of trivia and a gift for names is useful. A Brown education is essential (or being significantly involved with someone holding such a fine degree!).

If you have an interest in playing, we are organizing a pre-game for "Team Brown" at 1:30 pm at Park and 38th Street to warm-up before the face-off with the "super-nerds of Hyde Park" at 3:15 sharp* at a bar in midtown please email David Hsia '94 at events@brownnyc.org for details of the pre-game warm-up.

Rules will be explained, and we will play a demo round during the pre-game warm-up at 1:30 pm. Bring your quick wit, legible handwriting, and breadth of knowledge.

*UChicago is hosting this event. Alumni from MIT, Yale and a few other schools may also be joining us. Cost is free, with a suggested two-drink minimum to help defray the bar's expenses for hosting us. Participants are requested to arrive on time, and latecomers will buy drinks for on-timers. Adult participants only, please.

AFFILIATE EVENT: Brown Book Club's Fall Get Together
    Smorgaschef
    Tuesday September 25, 2007
    8:00pm
283 West 12th Street (corner of West 4th Street) 212.243.7073

Miss intellectual discussions over books? Read Mark Haddon's 'A Spot of Bother' with the Brown Book Club!

Please join the Brown Book Club of New York as it reconvenes for the fall to read A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon. Please visit the Brown Book Club website for more information. Please RSVP to brownbookclubnyc@gmail.com .

Haddon's acclaimed debut novel, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," brilliantly imagined the inner world of an autistic teen-ager. Here the hero is similarly uncommunicative and detached, this time because of a stiff upper lip. George, recently retired, thinks talking is "overrated" and greets the death of a friend with relief "that they would not be playing squash again." Obsessed with his own mortality, he barely registers the dramas around him: his wife is having an affair, his daughter is marrying a man she's not sure she loves, and his son is afraid to bring his boyfriend to the wedding.

    Reviews

"A Spot of Bother is tidily executed...This book is kind in spirit and emphathetic to its characters' assorted plights."

    -The New York Times

"A pleasant comic caper... the writing is extremely skilled and clever."

    -Chicago Tribune

"A Spot of Bother crackles and pops with humor and pathos... sparklingly written."

    -Los Angeles Times

Off-Broadway Theatre: HAPPY VALLEY and Q&A with Playwright
    Theatre Row, The Beckett Theatre
    Friday June 22, 2007
    8:00 pm
    410 West 42nd Street (between 9th & 10th Ave.)

Join us for the NY premiere of Aurorae Khoo '94's new play "HAPPY VALLEY" with a Brown Club exclusive q&a with the playwright!
"Khoo's play is a lovely, poetic piece of work that draws the audience into its world right from the start. Blending fantasy and reality, comedy and pathos, Khoo shows a remarkable skill for putting a human face on such issues as racism, immigration and motherhood." - Lisa Brock, The Star-Tribune (Minneapolis), September 20, 2005. ----------- Hi Brown Alums, Would love it if you could come next Friday night (June 22nd). This play is part of the National Asian American Theater Festival. At the request of the Brown Club in New York, I will be at the performance on Friday night and will be doing questions and answers afterward for Brown alums. Cheers, Aurorae ----------- It’s 1997 and all bets are off. Hong Kong is going from British rule into the hands of Mainland China and for hundreds of thousands of people in Hong Kong it seems like their world is ending. Inside of this churning turmoil, a young girl, Tuppy and her guardian uncle, Chester, are playing out the last days of the empire, pretending to be British and upper class while the world they have known is crumbling around them. There are domestic complications with the Filipino maid and Chester’s newfound girlfriend, Victoria, that add even more pressure to the situation as they realize it’s not going to be easy to get out. Chester is a charming schemer and has plans to use his connections in the horse trading business to get exit visas for all of them. But his British clients have all abandoned Hong Kong and left him twisting in the wind. Through poignant humor and charming fantasy, Tuppy and Chester try to deal with their impending dislocation. But in the end, as the doors are closing on the empire, Chester finds a way out, but he must choose who he can take with him, his niece or his girlfriend. It’s a gut wrenching decision that ultimately takes an ironic twist. Aurorae Khoo '94 is a playwright and screenwriter. When not inventing new stories and characters, Aurorae Khoo currently teaches undergraduate screenwriting at USC's renowned film school. Her plays have been produced and read off-Broadway, at the NY Fringe Festival, and at various theaters around the country, including South Coast Repertory. Khoo received a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Brown University and a MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University. Besides earning her SAG card by writing for Texas: Walker Ranger and other television shows, she was the winner 2002 Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays (Roger L. Stevens Award); and received a Bunting Fellowship in playwrighting at Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Most recently, she was awarded a $50,000 Emerging Playwrights grant in March 2007 from the Wallace Alexander Gerbode and William and Flora Hewlett Foundations for a new commissioned work for the San Francisco-based Asian American Theatre. Go here to purchase tickets ($18-$20):"http://www.naatf.org/index.php?page_id=48" (or cut-and-paste onto your browser) Please also email us at events@brownnyc.org to let us know you'll be coming! AFFILIATE EVENT: Relaunch of the Brown Book Club
    East of Eighth Restaurant
    Tuesday May 29, 2007
    8 pm
    254 W. 23rd St. (btw 7th - 8th avenues)

The Brown Book Club of New York Proudly Presents the Relaunch of the Book Club with <i>Forever</i> by Pete Hamill!
We will celebrate our relaunch with a champagne and wine reception. An active group begun in 1998, the Brown Book Club, affiliated with the Brown Club of New York, holds once monthly literary discussions at bars, restaurants and members' apartments in New York City. The Brown Book Club is currently accepting new members and reading suggestions! Joining the club is a great way to reconnect with Brown and to be part of intellectual discussions with fellow alumni. For more information, please view our website or contact us at brownbookclubnyc@gmail.com About the book This widely praised bestseller is the magical, epic tale of an extraordinary man who arrives in New York in 1740 and remains... forever. Through the eyes of young Cormac O'Connor granted immortality as long as he never leaves the island of Manhattan, we watch New York grow from a tiny settlement on the tip of an untamed wilderness to the thriving metropolis of today. And through Cormac's remarkable adventures in both love and war, we come to know all the city's buried secrets the way it has been shaped by greed, race, and waves of immigration, by the unleashing of enormous human energies, and, above all, by hope. If September 11th was a terrible warning of New York's mortality, Hamill's entertaining panhistorical fantasy is a paean to its immortality. -The New Yorker
